42. TV - Family Classics “Jane Eyre” 1961
In 1961, the anthology television show “Family Classics” released an hour long episode adapting Jane Eyre. It starred Sally Ann Howes as Jane and Zachary Scott as Rochester. Unfortunately this episode has never been officially released, but an audio recording of the show has surfaced and Charlene breaks down why she feels it’s the best of the hour-long American adaptations of Jane Eyre.
This is a rare solo episode in which Charlene can enthuse over this version and insert audio clips to illustrate all the best moments. If you like your Jane Eyre adaptations sappy, romantic, and GOTHIC, you might like this one. The full audio of the adaptation is on youtube here: ruclips.net/video/GxHWF0AjC...

The last chapter of the novel is an emotional one, where Jane brings the reader up to speed on what has happened after her marriage to Rochester. She describes such a state of blissful union that Mike and Charlene revel in Jane and Rochester’s happy ending. This is also the end of the podcast in its current format, but we do plan to occasionally podcast about a variety of Jane Eyre related topi...

Jane makes a visit to Ferndean, where Mr. Rochester is living in desolate seclusion. But she helps him regain his vivacity as she playfully eases his mind and reassures him that she is there to stay and will never leave him again. Join Charlene and Mike as they discuss the sweetly romantic reunion of our protagonists, and the penultimate chapter of this novel. Our theme song is “You Live In My ...

Jane’s return to Thornfield comes with suspense as Thornfield is not quite how she left it. Charlene and Mike enjoy the gossip from the innkeeper as he recounts the events from the last year. Welcome to the “pen-penultimate” chapter of the novel! Our theme song is “You Live In My Heart” by Zakhar Valaha. Audio clips are taken from the 1973 BBC production of Jane Eyre starring Sorcha Cusack and ...

St. John is a cold man indeed, as he gives Jane the cold shoulder for a week after she refused his offer of marriage. Jane struggles with whether or not she should trust St. John’s judgment on this, until she hears a mysterious summons from across the moors. A beautiful moment ensues as Jane makes the right decision for herself. Our theme song is “You Live In My Heart” by Zakhar Valaha. Audio c...

Jane is settling into domestic bliss as she welcomes Diana and Mary back home to Morton. St. John’s proposal that she marry him and live in India takes her by surprise. Just as the hosts of this show are unhappy with St. John’s approach, Jane must be more than disappointed after the romantic bar was set so high by Mr. Rochester. Our theme song is “You Live In My Heart” by Zakhar Valaha. Audio c...

St. John makes an unexpected visit to Jane’s cottage, and gleefully (in a repressed way) lets her know that he has found out her whole history. Jane is much less concerned with the reason for St. John’s discovery, as with the state of Mr. Rochester. She doesn’t find out much on that, but good news, she is now a rich heiress and has three cousins! Jane’s life has broadened and we are delighted t...

Jane’s hard work as the village teacher is paying off, as she appreciates the respect and affection of her students and their parents. A comparison of St. John and Helen’s devout outlooks on life ensue, especially in how it aids Jane during mom...

Jane is established in her new position as mistress of a small village school, and she gets a first hand glimpse of some new romantic drama - with the introduction of Rosamund Oliver. St. John seems to be resisting his passionate love for Rosamund, as Jane is resisting hers for Mr. Rochester. It is an obvious parallel, but it does bring more depth to St. John’s character. This is such a beautiful song. I think this version would have been more endearing to me if the makeup artist hadn’t made Jane look constantly surprised with the odd eyebrows.

This video is so beautiful and nostalgic! The 1973 adaptation is brilliant and Michael Jayston was born to play Mr. Rochester. I can imagine no other Mr. Rochester. Mesmerizing. His voice, just WOW! Sorcha Cusack is a very fine actress and brings so much emotion and subtlety. I am so moved by the natural yet passionate way he delivers the lines and the way he reaches for her hand so often. He is not only playing Rochester, he IS Rochester, this character we are so fascinated with. Michael Jayston truly shines in the role. I am also a fan of the 1983 and the 2006 mini series, also unforgettable, in their own way. Actually these 3 mini series are the only ones capturing the true spirit of the book. No one can understand why YT has blocked this 1973 version in all countries! This is the only reason this mini series has been forgotten - what a pity. It is a gem.

The scenes where she arrives and he sees her for the first time waooo he was impressed by her beauty and I know that what he could see in her was her look full of tenderness and simplicity. A woman totally different from what he had lived with Another time. That's real love. He could see her interior immediately. I was conquered by her external beauty and her beautiful heart. It was the reason that he conquered her. She was a woman without studies, without wealth, without great diplomas or studies. But he knew that she would truly love him with her soul, not because of her riches. .He faced everyone for her. I know I found a man he did. Because when I saw him for the first time something wonderful changed in my heart ❤️ 💕. I love you my L. You are a wonderful man.

Jane Eyre has to be the best novel ever, every part detailed with exceptional emotion, without the detailed show of intimacy ,let your imagination deal with that. At the same time giving decent morality so lacking today.

_I had access to this 1973 version of this adaptation for about five months when RUclips just snatched it from my playlist - BBC wanted it back 😔! I didn’t realize how much I would miss it until I came across these “fan favorites”. I appreciate them, but I really missed the chemistry between these two playing Jane & Edward. Time to shell out some money and just buy it_
